Story Time

No music today, just one of them good ol’ Tales From The Road too strange to not share. BIG LARGE MUSIC ANNOUNCEMENT COMING NEXT WEEK! STAY TUNED TO THIS HERE BLOG!

Yesterday afternoon, my buddy Daniel Ball Jr. and I set out to play the Utica Music and Arts Fest in Central New York state. It’s a three-day affair with plenty of bands and alcohol for everybody. Wandering around after our set, I could definitely see the big potential with this festival. It’s a great idea for a town that needs at least a few more. Continue reading

30 in 30 Off-Days: New York, Part 2 (Instrumental)

I like this whole “Tuesday and Friday” posting schedule here. HOWEVER, since posting two songs a week would end this project far earlier than it should, I have decided to post some random extra tracks on the weeks where I only post one song. This series of posts, called “Off-Days”, will highlight all sorts of stuff. Different mixes, previews of upcoming songs, music completely unrelated to 30 in 30… it’ll all be in here.

I must concede that I am now highly conflicted when it comes to this team. I’ve never liked them – my brother and I used to joke that our favorite team was “whoever is playing them” – but some of my best friends are fans of theirs AND they gave me one of my favorite tunes from the entire project. The team is almost – *gasp* – likable now, too, so I don’t know what to do with myself. Here’s their tune again, without the words. I like the “through-composed” nature of this song. I kinda liked the heavy feel without them, but the synth string and organ parts I programmed in really took the recording to the next level.

30 in 30 Off-Days: Cleveland (Campfire Mix)

Today is a special Off-Days post. This would be posted tomorrow, but I’m gonna be out of town, so Thursday it is!

I like this whole “Tuesday and Friday” posting schedule here. HOWEVER, since posting two songs a week would end this project far earlier than it should, I have decided to post some random extra tracks on the weeks where I only post one song. One of the nice things about St. Louis – besides the drastic change of musical pace and the fact that they got into a big ol’ brawl the day I posted it – is that it provides a sort of companion piece for Cleveland, 30 in 30’s first heavily acoustic tune. Because Cleveland is in that sorta folk-country-rawhide style, I decided to reduce the mix to a more “campfire” style – acoustic guitars, shaker, and vocals. Enjoy! (And please pass the marshmallows)

30 in 30 Off-Days: AAAARRRRR

Pittsburgh was not my first recording that featured a bunch of pirates sitting around being… well… pirates. The first of this kind actually happened in my first Baseball Project in 2005, which is what I have put in this post. The enclosed tune here was sort of an experiment. For this track, there was no written script – I just knew how it was going to end and I just improvised until that point. This process was a lot of fun and I think that comes through in the finished product. (For the record: the percussion tracks consist of a tambourine, a glass bottle played with a pencil, and multiple tracks of me slamming my hands on a computer desk.)

30 in 30 Off-Days: All-Star Break!

This week: It’s the All-Star Break! Tonight is the actual all-star game and last night was the home run derby. To commemorate this point in the season, here’s a tune I wrote about it for my very first Baseball Project back in 2005 (The Bobby Abreu bit refers to his incredible display in the home run derby that year). The song is very Black Flag-esque, but I don’t think any tune of theirs had a hot dog vendor in it… Enjoy the madness.

30 in 30 Off-Days: Chicago, Part 1 (Acoustic)

I like this whole “Tuesday and Friday” posting schedule here. Instead of the usual Off-Days fare like the first three iterations, here’s a brand new recording! Recently, I picked up a nice little condenser microphone (first heard in this project on the vocals for Houston) and wanted to try it on something other than my voice. Combine that with hearing a slow/sad/acoustic version of the first Chicago song in my head and I had myself an excuse to goof off one afternoon and post the results here. So… here it is! Chicago, Part 1, reduced to its bare essentials – Intro, chorus, ending. Consider it a reprise, if you will.

30 in 30 Off-Days: Cincinnati (Wall of Guitars)

As one might be able to tell from listening to Cincinnati, I really like Dethklok. Its music is the near-perfect definition of “over the top.” So, when the “When In Doubt” rule kicked in for this one (When in doubt, go fast and/or heavy), I decided to bust out the ol’ 7-string guitar and get ridiculously evil. The result: A recording that, in the middle section, features six guitar tracks going at once. Here is that bit again, without vocals.

30 in 30 Off-Days: Boston (Ending)

As the project was solidifying in my mind, one of the first rules set in place was “no parodies.” I wanted the music to be wholly original and not just other people’s songs with different words. Naturally, like most rules, an exception or pops up… and this is the first one. I mean, let’s face it – I kinda had to put “Sweet Caroline” in the Boston tune SOMEHOW, didn’t I?! Here’s the full bit without the early fadeout or the “Telephone voice” effect.

30 in 30 Off-Days: Atlanta (Instrumental)

This week’s Off-Days installment: A different take on Atlanta. I was really happy with how this one turned out, and the subsequent page views seem to reflect that (Thanks a lot!). So, I have decided to offer another side of the song – here it is again, but without all those pesky lyrics and vocals getting in the way this time.
